Valentines Day - (Of Friends and Angels)

The dictionary says:
Friend - (frend) noun.
1. A person whom one knows, likes and trusts.
2. A person with whom one is allied in a struggle or cause; comrade.
3. One who supports, sympathizes with, or patronizes a group.
4. An acquaintance.

The dictionary leaves out a few rather important things though.

It doesn't speak of the years that a friendship endures. It overlooks the laughter that fills the air when friends are together, the support, understanding and comfort a friend can offer, or the anguish one cannot escape from when a friend is suffering. There are the tears that have been shed, the smiles that have been exchanged, the secrets that have been kept, and the look that always says ...

I believe you”.

What about the hug that is so warm ... or the hand that’s there to help? Where is the mention of the ears that listen to your woes, the shoulder that is there to lean on...or perhaps even the heart that always cares.

The dictionary, I'm afraid, cannot begin to define the word.

For if one could so easily define friendship, then one could perhaps propose to create it, plan it ... maybe even buy it. But ,no ... friendship is a state so indefinable that one sometimes doesn’t even know it when it’s there.

It mysteriously creeps into one’s life, grows steadily from past to future and remains ever constant . It‘s magic .It’s chemistry. It’s a blessing ... it’s divine.

I believe in angels,
The kind that heaven sends,
I’m surrounded by such angels,
But I ... I call them friends
